delhi-map Delhi also known as National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT is India’s largest metropolis by area and the second-largest city by population. It is the eighth largest metropolis in the world by population, nearly 17 million.
Located on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has been known to be continuously inhabited since at least the 6th century BC. Delhi is also widely believed to have been the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital in ancient Indian History. Delhi re-emerged as a major political, cultural and commercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Gangetic plain after the rise of the Delhi Sultanates in 12th century AD .The Qutub Minar & Tughlakabad Fort are prominent monuments dating back to the period which are in present day South Delhi. In 1639 Mughal emperor Shahjahan built a new walled city in Delhi which served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. The magnificent Red Fort and Jama Masjid stand testimony here to the glorious architecture of the era.

The British were in control of much of India during the 18th and 19th centuries initially setting up Calcutta as the Capital. In1911 the Capital was shifted back to Delhi and that is how it has remained ever since. Edward Lutyens the principal architect of New Delhi the new Capital of British India blended Gothic architecture with Indian architectural traditions. The fusion brought forth such architectural marvels as India Gate the World War memorial, Rashtrapati Bhawan, North & South Blocks, & Parliament House the seats of power, The National Museum & Modern Art Gallery are all part of this central vista of New Delhi. Other architectural landmarks dotting the Delhi skyline are Jantar Mantar the Solar Observatory, Lotus Temple, Akshardham Temple, Birla Mandir, Purana Qila, & Humayun’s Tomb. Most of these are Word Heritage Sites Owing to the migration of people from across the country, Delhi has grown to be a multicultural, cosmopolitan metropolis. Its rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the relatively high average income of its population, has transformed Delhi into a major cultural, political, and commercial centre of India. Ultra modern Metro rail & Malls symbolize this prosperity.
